0664 Association of Nightmares with Predisposing and Perpetuating Factors in an Outpatient Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic

Abstract Introduction While nightmares are well known to be associated with greater sleep disturbance and psychopathology relative insomnia, this has primarily been observed in experimental samples not well-studied outpatient clinical samples. Several theories for the etiology maintenance of have identified roles both hyperarousal emotion dysregulation explaining association adverse psychiatric outcomes. Given that insomnia is also similar predisposing perpetuating factors such as trait arousability reactivity, it important understand how these compare between insomnia. Methods A total 445 patients (45.6±18.4 years old, 66.5% female, 13.0% minority) diagnoses nightmare disorder (n=32), (n=274) any other (n=139) were evaluated at Behavioral Sleep Medicine (BSM) program Penn State Health Research & Treatment Center. To measure symptoms depression, anxiety, stress, hyperarousal, dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, all completed Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS), Arousal Predisposition (APS), Ford Insomnia Response Test (FIRST), Pre-sleep Scale, Dysfunctional Beliefs Attitudes (DBAS), respectively. Analysis variance (ANOVA) examined between-group differences patient-reported Results There no significant on pre-sleep cognitive arousal, attitudes or depression scores (all ps>0.12).
